Today the venue is used for major touring Broadway productions, as well as concerts and other forms of live events. While the theatre is sometimes referred to as the Boston Opera House, no formal opera companies have made the venue their permanent home since the Opera Company of Boston departed. Every year, The Nutcracker is performed at the theatre for many adoring ballet fans. In 2004, after a massive and expensive renovation, the auditorium reopened and is now the home to the Boston Ballet. The venue closed in 1990 due to major financial issues. This is when the Boston Opera House took its namesake.

After more than 50 years in operation as a cinema, the theatre was converted into a home for the Opera Company of Boston.

There were also vaudeville acts hosted at the theatre during its heyday. The venue originally opened in 1928 as a movie theatre named the B.K.
